LIFE AND CAREER OF GROUNDBREAKING THEATRICAL GENIUS OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II - OUT OF MY DREAMS
CD COMPANION FEATURES TIMELESS MUSICAL NUMBERS AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 28th ON DECCA BROADWAY
Award-winning filmmaker JoAnn Young beautifully paints a picture of celebrated theatre lyricist and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II in the PBS documentary program Oscar Hammerstein II – Out of My Dreams. While chock-full of some of the most legendary musical numbers and rarely seen interview and performance footage, the documentary also commemorates Hammerstein’s work as a humanitarian and a political activist. As a special addition to the program, Decca Broadway is slated to release the CD companion Oscar Hammerstein II – Out of My Dreams on February 28.
The program, hosted by Matthew Morrison, the star of the Emmy award-winning television series, Glee, features musical numbers from many of Oscar Hammerstein’s most well-known works, including Show Boat, with music by Jerome Kern and Carousel, South Pacific, and Oklahoma!, with music by Richard Rodgers, as well as snippets of rare performances from films and television programs. Included are insightful interviews about Hammerstein and his work from theater legends composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim (a protegé of Hammerstein’s) and producer/director Harold Prince.
As an accompaniment to the documentary, Decca Broadway’s CD includes recordings of beloved Hammerstein songs from Broadway’s most celebrated shows. These works are pieced together from a variety of different sources and instill in the listener an appreciation for classic musical theatre. Included are songs from the original cast recordings of Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I and Carmen Jones as well as all-star studio recordings (The King and I with Julie Andrews, Carousel with Sarah Brightman and Barbara Cook), revival productions as well as recordings of live performances (South Pacific Live From Carnegie Hall), among others. The CD also includes liner notes by JoAnn Young about her in-depth relationship with Hammerstein and his works.
Oscar Hammerstein II – Out of My Dreams profoundly imparts on the audience the message that Hammerstein’s story was certainly about more than just the musicals he had written. The documentary will be broadcast nationally over PBS stations beginning March 3.
