Oscar Hammerstein II Out Of My Dreams | Various Artists | Video

OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II - OUT OF MY DREAMS features musical numbers from five of the timeless, ever popular Rodgers & Hammerstein films and songs and scenes from two versions of Show Boat, the groundbreaking musical written with composer Jerome Kern. Irene Dunne, Paul Robeson and Helen Morgan star in 1936 film and Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel are the stars of the 1951 remake. Also included, from the rarely seen 1941 film, Lady Be Good, Ann Sothern sings "The Last Time I Saw Paris," a song written by Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, which won the Academy Award as Best Song and "Dat's Love" from Carmen Jones.

Featured in archive footage from a 1954 television program saluting Rodgers & Hammerstein, are the original Broadway stars of Carousel, Jan Clayton and John Raitt, and South Pacific stars, Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin, singing hit songs from the musicals. From the same program, Bill Hayes and Janice Rule recreate the musical number, "You Are Never Away," from Allegro.

Very little film footage of Oscar Hammerstein exists but he is seen and heard on the program. Excerpts from his 1958 television interview with Mike Wallace are included as well as recorded comments from conversations with Arnold Michaelis and Tony Thomas.

Confirming the program's premise, Oscar says, "When a writer writes anything about anything at all, he gives himself away and what he has to say comes out."

This program also celebrates Hammerstein's work as a humanitarian and a political activist, a part of his life that is not universally known. From the beginning of his career to the end, he used his creative talents to raise the social consciousness of audiences all over the world. Show Boat examined racial discrimination long before the American Civil Rights' Movement began and South Pacific took a bold stand on the same subject with its dual plot of two couples struggling with 'inbred' prejudices. The powerful song, "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught," was controversial in 1949 but Rodgers and Hammerstein refused to cut it from the show.

From its inception, Hammerstein was a staunch supporter of the United Nations and worked with the World Federalist Movement to introduce the idea of World Government, which he hoped would lead to an enduring peace. He had helped Adlai Stevenson with some of his speeches in his presidential campaigns and it is believed that he was hoping to do more political writing in the future.

Stephen Sondheim, mentored by Oscar Hammerstein from an early age, is interviewed on the program and discusses the lessons he learned from the man he considers a theatrical revolutionary and both an artistic and a surrogate father. Also interviewed are Director/Producer Harold Prince, Shirley Jones (star of two films, Oklahoma! and Carousel), Mitzi Gaynor (star of the film South Pacific), Lyricist/Scriptwriter Joe DiPietro, Ted Chapin, President of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, and Hammerstein family members including his daughter, Alice Hammerstein Mathias, grandchildren, Oscar Andy Hammerstein, Melinda Walsh, and Peter Mathias, and his stepdaughter, Susan Blanchard. Seen in archive interviews are Oscar's late son, James Hammerstein, in a 1995 interview, and his deceased wife, Dorothy, interviewed in 1985.

OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II - OUT OF MY DREAMS was written, produced and directed by JoAnn Young. Edited by Laura Young. Producer: Sven Nebelung. Audio Editor: Richard Fairbanks. Consulting Producer: Oscar Andrew Hammerstein. Associate Producer: Amy Asch. Produced by Young Productions/Creative Retrospectives - A NJ Non-profit Corporation.

While chock-full of some of the most legendary musical numbers and rarely seen interview and performance footage, the documentary also commemorates Hammerstein’s work as a humanitarian and a political activist. As a special addition to the program, Decca Broadway is slated to release the CD companion Oscar Hammerstein II – Out of My Dreams on February 28.

The program, hosted by Matthew Morrison, the star of the Emmy award-winning television series, Glee, features musical numbers from many of Oscar Hammerstein’s most well-known works, including Show Boat, with music by Jerome Kern and Carousel, South Pacific, and Oklahoma!, with music by Richard Rodgers, as well as snippets of rare performances from films and television programs. Included are insightful interviews about Hammerstein and his work from theater legends composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim (a protegé of Hammerstein’s) and producer/director Harold Prince.

As an accompaniment to the documentary, Decca Broadway’s CD includes recordings of beloved Hammerstein songs from Broadway’s most celebrated shows. These works are pieced together from a variety of different sources and instill in the listener an appreciation for classic musical theatre. Included are songs from the original cast recordings of Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I and Carmen Jones as well as all-star studio recordings (The King and I with Julie Andrews, Carousel with Sarah Brightman and Barbara Cook), revival productions as well as recordings of live performances (South Pacific Live From Carnegie Hall), among others. The CD also includes liner notes by JoAnn Young about her in-depth relationship with Hammerstein and his works.

Oscar Hammerstein II – Out of My Dreams profoundly imparts on the audience the message that Hammerstein’s story was certainly about more than just the musicals he had written. The documentary will be broadcast nationally over PBS stations beginning March 3.

Oscar Hammerstein II: Out of My Dreams
1. The release marks her second album in the states and her first on the label. America is already well acquainted with May through her performances on “The Tonight Show” in April, the 2010 Grammy Awards and a PBS Concert Special with Jeff Beck. With the release of Mayhem, Imelda will embark on a string of summer dates including a July 21 album release party at New York City’s Mercury Lounge, Central Park Summer Stage with Wanda Jackson and Lollapoolaza (dates attached).

May has achieved triple-platinum status in her native Ireland and gold status in the U.K., along with receiving numerous awards including Best Breakthrough Artist at the 2010 Classic Rock Awards and Best Female Artist of 2010 at the Irish Meteor Awards. She has also graced TV screens in the U.K. performing on “Graham Norton” and twice on “Jools Holland.” Mayhem has received four-star reviews from MOJO, The Daily Mirror, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. The album reached number seven on the U.K. chart and remained in the Top Ten for two weeks, and the Top 20 for eight weeks.

On Mayhem, May wrote 13 out of the 14 tracks including the title track/first single, and U.K. hits “Inside Out” and “Psycho.” The album also contains a rendition of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love.” Her accomplished band includes husband Darrel Higham on guitars, Al Gare on double-bass, Dave Priseman on trumpet, and Steve Rushton on drums.

Performing a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly, May self-released her debut Love Tattoo, which went Triple Platinum. The album was picked up and released by Decca abroad and on Verve Forecast in the U.S. Since that time, May has shared stages with Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, David Gilmore, Shane Macgowan, Van Morrison, Lionel Richie, Wanda Jackson, Paul Brady, Jamie Cullum and Meatloaf. In 2009, Love Tattoo knocked Bruce Springsteen off the number one spot on the Irish album charts making May the first woman to grace the top spot in nearly 20 years.

May fell in love with rockabilly and the blues at the age of nine. She went onto perform in burlesque clubs and was part of a swing troupe before breaking out on her own. She caught people’s attention not only musically but with her 50s look that has led her to grace the front cover of the Irish Sunday Times Style Magazine.

IMELDA MAY TOUR DATES
July 21 Mercury Lounge New York, NY
July 26 9:30 Club Washington, DC
July 27 Central Park Summerstage New York, NY
July 28 Trocadero Philadelphia
July 30 Brighton Music Hall Brighton, MA
August 7 Lollapalooza Chicago, IL
August 9 The Independent San Francisco, CA
August 11 Oregon Zoo Amphitheater Portland, OR
August 12 The Neptune Seattle, WA

Very Disappointing | News

Let me start by first saying that we are very excited a bout the iPad contest. Many people have signed up and are already finding new twitter followers and that is great to see.....

2nd..... I want everyone to know before you read any further that I am not speaking for my group at this point this message is coming directly from me. I have to say that I am very disappointed with some of the people that we called diehard supportive Boyz II Men fans. I'm disappointed with their reactions, comments and attitudes about the contest. I am not going to mention any one's name or throw them under the bus, but it is very disheartening to do something that you not only feel is a good thing to do, but you do something that many fans have asked you to do and people complain and have problems with it. This is very reminiscent of the reaction we got from many people about the cruise and to the surprise of the people who complained 90% of the people who went truly enjoyed themselves. Many fans were very understanding about our situation with the cruise company we were dealing with and told us that they wish they could go but they just flat out couldn't afford it.....and we understood that. Others who complained tried to find a "work around" by buying a cheaper ticket with Carnival and trying to sneak there way into the Boyz II Men events that all the other fans paid their hard earned money for. (again I'm not going to name names, you know who you are!) Some of you have these "clicks" of people that you speak with online and tend to always try and get them riled up about petty issues that grown people shouldn't stress about. Life is too short for that.

I'm not a big twitter follower but in order for the contest to go well I had to become familiar with it, and I've seen and noted many of the negative comments or 'tweets" and jokes that some of you have made about the contest and it's rules. I am never one to say that people are not entitled to their opinion. Many wonder why I don't say a lot and it's because I was taught as a child that if you don't know what to say or can't say anything nice you should keep your mouth shut! A few of the adults here who have made many of these negative remarks and have their own children should know exactly what I'm talking about.

You all know how long it has taken for us to get people to even be interested in this group after all of these years. Some of these same people were part of helping us to raise the awareness of the group, but in this situation.... if you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem! Negativity breeds negativity, so for the groups sake ( if you care at all) find something or someone else to talk or 'tweet" about if your comments have to be negative.

The contest is going to go well with or without the bad apples. Again many fans have already started, and I (we) thank you for it! We are going to throw more contest through out the year and we hope many of you enjoy them. As I said before I am speaking for myself and not the group so if any of these people would like to state their opinion or position in this issue I and very open to talk. Please do not sent me emails, tweets, Facebook posts or personal messages about this issue. If you'd like to talk I am the type of man accustomed to looking one in the face when discussing issues of importance.

So again those who are finding the contest fun thats a good thing, and for some of you who ask for the sun, but complain that it's too hot when it comes from behind the clouds, your on your own!

Meaning Every Word

Nathan

**COMPOSER STEPHEN SCHWARTZ TO RECEIVE COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH MATINEE PERFORMANCE**

(NEW YORK, NY – November 8, 2010) With sales surpassing the two million mark, the Grammy® award-winning original cast recording of Wicked has officially been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Since its opening, the production has continued to captivate audiences and currently ranks in the top 20 of Broadway’s longest running shows, having played over 2,910 performances to date.

Declared “a cultural phenomenon” by Variety and “The Best Musical of the Decade” by Entertainment Weekly, Wicked is the winner of 35 major awards including the Grammy® and three Tony Awards. The acclaimed CD continues to be a mainstay on top of Billboard’s Broadway Chart and the music has very clearly made its mark on popular culture – having been performed on hit TV shows such as ‘Glee’ and ‘American Idol’.

The story begins long before Dorothy drops in, when two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

To celebrate the occasion, composer Stephen Schwartz will be presented with a commemorative plaque following the matinee performance at The Gershwin Theater on November 10, 2010. Schwartz’s storied career spans over four decades and his body of work includes scores for Godspell (1971) and Pippin (1972) as well as a number of successful films including Pocahonatas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), The Prince of Egypt (1998) and Enchanted (2007).

With this honor, Wicked joins an elite group of Decca Broadway cast recordings to achieve double platinum status including Rent, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Cats.

That’s a side of me I’ll never forget. That’s how I learned."

On her extraordinary new album Confessions, produced by acclaimed songwriter and recording producer Bruce Roberts, Minnelli returns to the songs that she has loved her whole life, and delivers the most intimate, revealing recording of her legendary career. A collection of American classics written by the likes of Jerome Kern, Cy Coleman, Irving Berlin, and Sammy Cahn, Confessions features the entertainment icon performing some of her own personal favorite songs in simple, stripped-down arrangements.

One of the world's best-loved performers, Minnelli belongs to an elite group of entertainers who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Oscar. Confessions is the follow-up to her wildly acclaimed 2008 return to Broadway, Liza's at the Palace, which won a Tony Award (her fourth) for Best Special Theatrical Event, and was nominated for a Grammy. Perhaps more significant, though, the disc is her first non-cast album studio recording in almost fifteen years.

Though the album will surely stand as a landmark in her celebrated body of work, Minnelli maintains that the origins of Confessions were entirely organic, almost accidental. "Ah the parties!," she says. "People like Tony Bennett—or more surprising, even Janet Jackson—would come by, and we would end up singing around the piano."

Inspired by the intimacy of those incredible evenings, she started recording some of her favorite songs with longtime accompanist, pianist Billy Stritch. And unlike so many of the “Songbook” albums that have come out in recent years, full of over-familiar song selections, Minnelli dug deeper into the catalogues of these great writers, balancing beloved numbers like “All the Way” and “At Last” with such hidden gems as “You Fascinate Me So” and “Moments Like This.”

"I've never done anything like this," says Minnelli. "A lot of these songs were completely new for me—I was aware of them, but had never recorded them. They're just songs I love, beautifully written, stuff I felt passionate about. My friends say, 'this is a side of you that we know, but the public doesn’t. It’s like being in your house!'"

The results are unlike anything Minnelli has done in her legendary career, which is now entering its fifth decade. Perhaps the world’s most complete performer, her roles in such films as Cabaret, The Sterile Cuckoo, and Arthur, and her TV and stage shows, including Liza with a Z and Stepping Out, have long established her as a multi-talented, larger-than-life star.

Which, of course, makes the subtlety of her performances on Confessions all the more surprising. Minnelli describes her singing on the album as “intimate and sexy, with a real jazz feel.” And as she continued to work on the project over time, trying more and more songs, some common threads started to emerge. “These songs all said something about relationships and love,” she says. “They’re about the different sensations that love brings out—sensual, but also with some humor.”

Asked which song or performance on the album surprised her the most, Minnelli points to perhaps the best-known composition on the collection—Harry Warren and Mack Gordon’s “At Last,” which took on new resonance last year as the first dance at President Obama’s inauguration dinner. “I was a little reluctant to sing that one,” she says. “It’s been done so beautifully. But I thought I might as well try, and I think it’s cheerful, hopeful, full of good stuff.”

Still, the singer is reluctant to point to any of the songs as particular favorites or of heightened significance to her. “This is really one of those records where everybody has to pick his own favorites. It’s so personal,” she says.

It’s difficult to imagine an artist taking such a creative leap more than forty-five years after starting her career in 1963, in an Off-Broadway revival of the musical “Best Foot Forward,” for which she received the Theatre World Award. What could still represent a challenge for someone who grew up in the spotlight, and has continually explored new avenues for her work as a singer, dancer, and actress (not to mention philanthropist and teacher)?

The answer was to return to the most basic configuration of all—a voice, a piano, and some magnificent songs. Though Minnelli states that she didn’t start work on Confessions with any sort of plan, she also says that it didn’t take long before she could see where it was heading.

“It was clear from minute we started, and it became more clear as it took shape,” she says. “When we started to put the songs together and look at a running order for the album, we thought, ‘Yeah, this works.’”

Liza Minnelli believes that the key to entertainment is no mystery. Just like that little girl sitting under the piano, an artist needs to retain her perspective as a listener and a fan, and remember what it is that made you love the sound, the look, the feeling in the first place.

“To be a good performer, you have to be a good audience,” she says. “So when you think, ‘that sounds right, I would enjoy that if I heard it,’ that’s when you start to think, it seems like we’re on the right track. And, of course, you never know—but with this one, I really think we are.”

Tracks
1. Confession
2. You Fascinate Me So
3. I Hadn't Anyone Til You
4.
